Book Review – Briar Rose

Published 06/09/2013 by leannecrabtree

briarrose

Name: Briar Rose

Author: Jana Oliver

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Fairy Tales

Release Date: 12th September 2013

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I received this book as a first reads copy via GoodReads and My Kinda Book.

For Briar Rose, life is anything but a fairy tale. She’s stuck in a small town in deepest Georgia with parents who won’t let her out of their sight, a bunch of small-minded, gossiping neighbours and an evil ex who’s spreading nasty rumours about what she may or may not have done in the back of his car. She’s tired of it all, so when, on her sixteenth birthday, her parents tell her that she is cursed and will go to sleep for a hundred years when the clock strikes midnight, she’s actually kind of glad to leave it all behind. She says her goodbyes, lies down, and closes her eyes . . . And then she wakes up. Cold, alone and in the middle of the darkest, most twisted fairy tale she could ever have dreamed of. Now Briar must fight her way out of the story that has been created for her, but she can’t do it alone. She never believed in handsome princes, but now she’s met one her only chance is to put her life in his hands, or there will be no happy ever after and no waking up.

I’ll start by saying I love the cover of this book.

Then: I’m a big Jana Oliver fan, having loved her Demon Trappers series so when I saw the First Reads giveaway on Goodreads for this I just had to enter and luckily for me, I was picked as one of the winners.

I have to admit that I, too have always liked the idea of Princes and Princess’ and fairy tale endings and this was a unique take on it, with the twisted fairy tale one that is almost of Briar Rose’s own making.

I kinda wish I could say more but I don’t want to ruin it for those who are going to read this…sorry ;D

Saying that, it was very unique to me, as I have never seen or heard of anything like this before, and I really enjoyed it. Maybe it was the authors style which I can easily fall into or maybe it was the idea of the story but I was captivated by it from early on.

I also really liked all the major characters though it took a while for Pat to grow on me. The rest; Briar, Joshua, Reena and Ruric were all pretty cool from the start.

If you’re a fan of the author then you should give this a try, as well as those who like fantasy books as this is no ordinary fairy tale.

Proof Ordered of Cat’s Wolf :S

Published 05/09/2013 by leannecrabtree

I eventually went with the Girl and Wolf cover, since it had 3 votes out of 4 and the CreateSpace team have looked through the file and found no errors so I’ve ordered a proof copy to look through.

The only problem now is that it says it’s going to take up until the 22nd of OCTOBER to be delivered. I really hope I’m happy with it now…

September Challenge (Goodreads)

Published 03/09/2013 by leannecrabtree

So, on Goodreads, I’m a member of a few groups and one of the more active (Paranormal Addicts & Newbies – Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy) does challenges every month and some full year ones. Well this month it’s visually pleasing. This is a good thing because it means I have to read some of my older books that have been on my kindle for over a year.

We had to pick book covers which contained these:

Hot Male (I’ll leave you to interpret this one!)
Beautiful Woman
Artistic Cover
Vampire
Blood
Castle
Moon
Car
Couple
Gothic
Rose
Tattoo
Terrible
Dress

And pick a difficulty rating: 3 (easy) 6 (medium) 9 (hard) —- I went for 9.

So here are the books I’ll be reading for the challenge:

I’m currently reading Die For Me and Birth of the Nyxian.

Look what’s just arrived in the post!

I won it via GoodReads last month and it’s just arrived. Cant wait to read it! As you may know I loved Jana Oliver’s Demon Trappers series so I have high hopes this will be as good. I’ll let you all know what I think when I get around to reading it 😀

Ciao for now!

Back to possible paperback covers

Published 28/08/2013 by leannecrabtree

Well, I knew the moon wasn’t exactly related to the book, so I’ve just been scouring the internet for images that do relate and found an awesome black wolf. I also found a nice picture of some monochrome (I’m sticking to a theme, or so it seems) woods, they’re quite a big part of being a wolf; hunting and all that.

I just don’t know what to put on the cover. If you can come up with something, feel free to let me know. But so far, here are the covers I’ve done:

Moon?

Black Wolf?

Monochrome Forest?

Which do we prefer? If any?

I’ve just been messing around on CreateSpace and came up with this design for the front Cover of Cat’s Wolf. I’m not entirely convinced that I like it, but at the same time I do. Maybe it’s because it’s so different from the original cover?

Just wondered what you guys thought? Like? or Not?

A Break…

Published 21/08/2013 by leannecrabtree

…from a couple of things.

One:  ARC’s. I haven’t requested any new ones from NetGalley in an attempt to try and work my way through the list of books on my Kindle. The number is still in the 700’s and though I have cut down on buying new one’s it still happens every so often when I cant resist a book that’s price has reduced that’s on my wish-list. If you are on GoodReads you can view my list here. If not, then I’m sure you can imagine how long it is.

Two: Wolf Claimed. It’s kinda hit a bit of a brick-wall. I’m sure it’ll all come back to me soon but for the time being it’s on hold. Instead I’m concentrating on other stories and working my way through both my paperbacks and kindle stories (one of each at a time). Finger’s crossed I’ll have good news for you in the next blog post.

Ciao for now 🙂

Look what’s just arrived in the post. Ebay can be a Godsend sometimes when you want books. These were cheaper (they’re brand new) than on Amazon and they’re only £3.85 each on there.

I just need Foretold now, the final book in the quartet, and I’m sorted.

foretold

I so need to know what’s going to happen between Riley, Simon, Beck and Ori.

I’m routing for Beck though!!

Lover At Last

Well I tried to pick it up today from WHSmith only to be told the publishers aren’t printing anymore–but considering they haven’t printed any yet anyway I’m annoyed! I did get refunded but now I have to try and find it somewhere else because the last time I checked it wasn’t available on Amazon either unless I wanted it for my Kindle but I don’t. If anyone knows where I can get it in paperback, please let me know. Thank you!
